Martial Arts - Is It Ever Too Late To Start?
Posted: October 28, 2021
Are you interested in starting mixed martial arts, but you’re afraid that you’re too old? Just remember you’re never alone. Many adults or seniors will be in the same boat as you. And unfortunately, because of the thought process, never make it into a gym simply because of their age.
Let’s get one thing straight. Age is just a number. If you don’t ever try new things regardless of your age you will feel a sense of regret and most importantly, you’ll never know what you’re missing out on!
In today’s Ellis Academy Of Self Defence blog, we’re going to eliminate the stigma of age when it comes to starting mixed martial arts and give you multiple reasons to change your mindset.
5 Reasons Why It’s Never Too Late To Start Martial Arts
1. Self Defence Is An Essential Skill
We can’t ever emphasise this enough. Even if you technically live in the safest country, town, village, or city in the world, it doesn’t mean you’re entirely safe from danger. After all, you never know what’s out there, so it’s way better to be safe than sorry – and equip yourself with the necessary skills to protect yourself and your loved ones in the face of danger.
When you train martial arts, you’re not only learning the techniques you can execute to defend yourself, but also gaining the ability to think on your feet and react calmly when faced with external situations.
2. Your Health Matters
Although exercise is important, to all age groups, the older we get the more important it becomes to stay active and maintain healthy habits. Taking up martial arts in your adult life is a great way, to not just maintain your health, but to get healthier. After a few years of training, you may find you’re in better shape than you were when you were technically in your prime.
The best physical fitness routines are the ones that don’t feel like working out. With martial arts, the way you get in shape is also a fun activity to look forward to all day, so working out never feels like a chore.
3. Martial Arts Are For Everyone
It deeply saddens me knowing people assume martial arts is only for a certain type of person – be it strong, fit, muscular, young. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to be all those things to start martial arts, because martial arts will transform you into those things.
The hardest thing to do in life is to start and decide to train, not committing yourself to it week in week out. Regardless of gender, size, age, and/or fitness level, there’s always a martial arts class at Ellis Academy Of Self Defence that can cater to you personally. So, all you have to do is be open to learning and working hard but most importantly having fun whilst doing so.
4. Martial Arts Is A Community
Another benefit to starting martial arts as an adult is socialising. With no age limit, you’ll be training with others of your age on the mats in every Adult class. It can often be difficult; to meet like-minded people as we grow older, and commitments like work and children limit the ability to go out and meet new people. With martial arts classes, you have an hour or more of training with people who share your love of the art you choose. Many great friendships have their roots in martial arts classes.
5. Saying “It’s too late” Is Just An Excuse
Lastly, we’d like to get straight to the point. This blog has given you multiple reasons to start martial arts regardless of your age. Using it as a reason to not start - is just another excuse to stay at home. In fact, it’s one of the best excuses your mind can come up with to stop you from joining the classes.
To be truthful, nobody cares how old you are or how you look, as long as you’re open-minded to learn new things. Old or young, we all come to classes to pursue the same goals, and we are always there to help and support each other.
As martial artists, we are one big family, and once you feel that connection, you will live and breathe martial arts for the rest of your life.
