Family Self Defence

Posted: January 27, 2022

The new year is a perfect time to dedicate yourself and the family to learning a new skill. And what better time to start enjoying it with the whole family. If you’re thinking of taking your family to a self defence class, we can assure you, you won’t look back.

Teaching children the gentle art of self defence can lead to huge benefits. If you’re ever worried about them being bullied, which is only natural. Bullying is an unfortunate fact of life, and it’s sad to say that one-fifth of young people have experienced it.

The effects of bullying on young people can be damaging for life. And no one wants that for their children. Fortunately for you, we can help the situation hopefully never arise to you or your family.

Our family self defence classes are ideal when starting. In this Ellis Academy Of Self Defence blog, we’re going to inform you the reasons behind the family self defence and whether they’ll be worth it for you and your family.

What Are Family Self Defence Classes?

Training in our dojo, we offer family self-defence classes that can give you the ability to defend yourselves physically. This isn’t about teaching you to fight. It’s giving you the techniques to resist opponents and to protect yourself.

The main goal of Jiu Jitsu is to resist and control an opponent, forcing them into submission. Using these techniques, you can wrestle them to the ground and render them harmless.

This applies to opponents who are bigger and stronger than you, and Jiu Jitsu enables you to overcome them without punching or kicking them.

Are Self Defence Classes Worth It?

Family Self defence classes are definitely worth it and beneficial as it teaches you to recognise and avoid dangerous situations and how to defend yourself if you are attacked.

This type of training has depth because it does a lot more than offer physical training. It builds self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-awareness. It provides a progressive framework where you learn to apply these qualities so that they become instinctive.

What Age Should You Start Self Defence Classes?

Knowing when to introduce your child to martial arts is completely down to you. We get asked this question a lot down at our dojo, my answer is always – It depends!

The reason I say this is because of three factors. You have to consider the type of martial art you want your child to start, the stage of development of your child and lastly, the dojo and their requirements.

The only controllable factor we have is the third. As an academy of self defence we have multiple classes available, we start our classes with children as young as 3. We have created a programme whereby the student swaps classes in the early stages of their development according to their age so we have them at a similar level of skill, but development-wise in terms of growth and mental capabilities.

What Is The Best Form Of Self Defence?

Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) are very similar. The original form of self defence was Gracie, BJJ was adapted to suit more of a fighting style when it came to competitions like the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships). From the outset, you wouldn’t notice, but once you practice and learn these arts, you will be able to distinguish the two.

To summarise, they both consist of the same submissions, controls, sweeps and escapes. The main difference is the way the coaches teach and the academy’s training focus. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies throughout the globe focus their teaching and training methods on the sport of Jiu-Jitsu, however, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the continued learning of self-defence.
